Covering The Basics

Starting a garden can be a daunting task, especially for those who have never attempted to start one. Not to worry though as we have searched for some helpful gardening advice. These are just a few of the many ideas to help you get your garden up and running in no time.

Think Big But Start Small
Having a big, beautiful, multi-colored garden is every gardeners dream, but one of the biggest mistakes individuals new to gardening can make is to try and bite off more than they can chew. Think small. You will be able to plant more than you think in a very small place and it will be easier to maintain. This will allow you to learn the basics of gardening like how to control weeds, pests, and how to water efficiently. As you gain experience you can expand your current garden or start a new one.

Compost - Your New Best Friend
One of the main tools in any gardener’s arsenal is the compost pile. Often misunderstood, having a compost pile will allow you to create your own, organic fertilizer without having to buy compost in a bag. Whether you decide to buy compost from a store or create your own pile in an out-of-the-way section of your yard or even purchase a compost container and place it on the side of your home, the choice is entirely up to you. Whatever your decision, using compost is one key factor your garden cannot do without.

Keep Your Soil Happy
Another key ingredient for obtaining the garden of your dreams is soil. Using compost in conjunction with your soil will give it extra nutrients that are vital to making your garden bloom. Keep in mind that you must avoid walking on the soil in your garden as this compacts the soil and makes it difficult for roots to develop. Try to create paths in between rows. A great gardening tip is to use a piece of wood to step on when working in a particular area. This will evenly distribute your weight over the soil. Also try not to walk on the soil when it is wet. Walking on wet soil can cause it to clump when it dries. Make sure the soil is not powdery. Powdery soil is a sure sign that it has been overworked.

To Mulch Or Not To Mulch
Mulch is necessary item that is often overlooked and ignored. Mulch serves many purposes such as maintaining moisture and temperature, prevents weed growth and acts as a stabilizer for the soil. A handy gardening tip is to mulch all of the excess debris in your yard. Not only does this help clean up your yard but it also provides necessary material your garden will need.

Watering
Learning how to properly water your garden is a key component that every gardener needs to know. Watering briefly for brief periods can cause plant roots to stay near the surface, which can cause a shorter life span for your plants. It is always best to deep soak your garden early in the day which encourages plant roots to grow deep into the soil and it also gives plant leaves a chance to dry out preventing disease from fungus.

Maintain Your Garden
Once your garden is established take a few minutes everyday and stop in for a visit. Take a look around while having a cup of coffee in the morning or drop by after work. Make sure you touch and feel the plants you are growing. While you’re at it why not pull a few weeds, give extra water to any plants that need it. Not only will this ease the burden of having to work on your garden during the weekends, going the extra step will free up more time for you to concentrate on other things.
